Brakes and Clutches in

Clutch failure

Driving your car is not likely to be possible if your clutch fails as gear changes won't be possible due to your car being stuck in gear or neutral. You might therefore require a recovery vehicle to tow your Subaru to a local garage who can fix the problem. Because disconnection of the engine from the transmission is needed for a new clutch to be fitted, a lot of labour will be involved, making clutch replacement one of the more expensive jobs on a car.

As a result, when you believe you may have clutch problems in your car, determining whether the clutch is responsible for vehicle faults is worthwhile rather than immediately carrying out a clutch replacement.

How the brakes on your BMW work?

Brakes work to provide the opposite function to clutches, due to them slowing and stopping vehicles.

Two types of brakes are found on cars - parking brakes and service brakes.

Handbrakes are applied when a vehicle is stationary, and the foot brake slows your car when driving on the road.

To apply service brakes, the driver pushes the pedal towards the floor which is the middle pedal in the foot well.

This causes the brake calliper pistons to press against the brake disc on the wheel creating friction to slow the car down, which is achieved by making kinetic propulsion energy to heat that the surrounding air then cools.

Should your brakes become ineffective, make sure you consult the expertise of a garage.

Braking system parts

There are lots of components in brakes, with most parts being concealed behind alloys or hub caps. Most sports cars, such as Porsches, have coloured callipers however so they stand out from the disc and wheel.

Drum brakes are found on rear wheels where the parking brake triggers activation of the brake shoes which then secures the vehicle when stopped on an incline or parked. The front wheels are where discs and callipers are found, and they are applied when the foot pedal is compressed.

The disc is rubbed against by the pistons in the calliper when compression of air or hydraulic fluid occurs in hoses and pipes in the brake system. Seek the guidance of a reliable garage to examine or replace your vehicle's brake parts.

What clutches do

Cars with manual transmission have clutches.

They enable gear changes when a pedal, which is furthest left in the foot well on the driver's side, has been pushed down.

The cable that links from the clutch pedal straight to the mechanism of the clutch which parts the plates of the clutch by pushing the clutch foot pedal, allowing different gears or reverse to be chosen using the stick shift.

When moving your foot off the clutch pedal too soon, grinding can occur which can damage the clutch.

Gradual reduction in the pressure holding the clutch pedal following a gear change is how jerking can be prevented.
