MOTs in
brake assessments
Brakes are an essential vehicle safety feature resulting in strict test requirements for Jaguar brakes in MOT tests. Foot brakes bring cars to a stop when driving, whereas handbrakes and parking brakes on the rear wheels hold vehicles when it is on a gradient stationary, stopped in traffic or parked up.
Tests to assess brake performance are conducted to test effectiveness of brakes, using plate brake tests, roller brake tests and gradient tests. Inspections are carried out to identify whether there are any problems such as: parts causing leaks or pipes and flexible hoses vibrating, rigid pipes are not being affected by fouling off other parts, or chafing on brake components, and that reservoirs on air and vacuum brakes are not loose or damaged.
Should KIA brake performance be reduced on your car, don't wait until your MOT is due to speak to a garage.
Testing emissions and fuel systems in
Systems for fuel and exhaust should be checked for excessive fume emissions and to determine whether all mechanisms are running smoothly. When the exhaust system is being checked, components such as air filters will be checked, to look for any parts which may have developed holes or aspects that could have been corroded resulting from grit on the roads.
Exhausts with excessive corrosion will fail a MOT test in . As well as these factors, excess fuel emissions can mean a failed MOT if levels of carbon dioxide, hydrogen and lambda are considered too high.
Faulty oxygen sensors will be responsible for damage to catalytic converters and emissions failures following unburnt fuel passing through the exhausts pipes.
road wheel and tyre checks
Tyres will be examined for the correct structure and type, inclusive of aspect ratio and nominal size, thus making sure that the gearing of the drive train is not affected. The type of tyre will also be scrutinised to determine whether they are cross ply, bias belted or radial-ply.
Radial-ply tyres can be constructed from fabric or steel. The tyre wall also has to display the tyre size information, and is usually accompanied by load index, ply rating and the speed symbol.
A gauge will be used to ensure that tyres have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm throughout the whole outside of the tyre and should encompass the central three quarters of the tyre surface. In addition, tyres cannot have any tears or bulges or display any exposed cords as otherwise there is a possibility that it will not pass the MOT test unless the damaged tyres are replaced.
MOT advice can be provided by garages.
MOTs are required because:
Vehicles degrade as time passes therefore ensuring minimum levels of quality are met is one method that can improve safety on UK roads. This will mean that the driver of the vehicle, as well as other road users and pedestrians, are less likely to be involved in an accident with a vehicle.
If you wish to have your car legally road worthy, it has to have a valid MOT certificate. The MOT database can be accessed by the police who will be able to recognise which car's haven't passed a MOT.
A MOT test will just inspect the condition of components at the time where MOT testing in is being done, and does not represent the overall condition of the car. If you have been driving a vehicle without a MOT certificate then your vehicle's insurance is invalid, unless under circumstances exceptional to the rule.
MOT tests
If your Vauxhall's MOT is due, finding a reliable garage is important.
MOT stations should always be approved by VOSA and should always have the logo with three blue triangles on display, and a poster with the max MOT cost should also be displayed.
You can often view your MOT taking place by the registered tester in , though most people will drop their Chrysler off at the garage and fetch it from the garage forecourt later that day once any repairs have been carried out and the car has passed its MOT.
Paper copies of the MOT certificate are given to the owner, but the actual certification is logged on a central computer database.
If your certificate gets damaged or lost, you can get a replacement from any test station.
When post offices issue road tax, you'll need to show the MOT certificate.
car lights, horns and mirrors
In order to ensure vehicle safety, visibility must as good as possible. Therefore fault wiper blades, cracked wing mirrors or horns that are inaudible, can be responsible for your vehicle failing its MOT. Two mirrors should be present on all vehicles to ensure that the driver is aware of vehicles behind them.
Lights must also be operating sufficiently, with bulbs of a white or yellow light for headlights, making sure that colours are matching. Switches for the purpose of operating indicators, headlights and rear lights must have no delays and therefore react immediately. Main beam lights must also turn on and off accordingly, switching to dipped beam headlights to prevent oncoming vehicles being dazzled.
Checks and repairs will be completed by garages.
