Timing Belts in Aberystwyth

Definition of a cam belt

Timing belts provide a connection between the camshaft and crankshaft of an engine. It has teeth running it's length that vary in shape depending on the sort of belt your vehicle has. Timing belts that are new will have rounded teeth, whereas older belts will often have sharper teeth.

Timing belts are normally made from rubber and are then covered with materials like twaron to make them stronger so that they can last longer between replacements. Modern timing belts are made out of highly resistant materials like HSN to prevent damage as a result of exposure to high temperatures. Modern timing belts tend to be narrower as this will decrease weight and friction subsequently.

What role does a timing belt play?

Cam belts are belts that are normally made of rubber that are able to control the timing of valves in engines. The engine valves need to open and close a set number of times and this is regulated by the cam belt. A timing belt's teeth are purposefully designed so that they can deliver maximum efficiency for their engine.

These teeth turn the cam shaft of the engine ad keep it in sync with the crankshaft. The camshaft will need to turn half as fast as the crankshaft of the engine, enabled by the timing belt. If this is not allowed to happen then the engine does not operate properly which can lead to your engine suffering irreparable damage.

Examples of such problems can be engine valves remaining open at the wrong time resulting in them being blocked by the pistons of the engine.

Consequences of not addressing timing belt problems

Failure to recognise the signs of a damaged timing belt, or worse yet; failure to act upon it can have disastrous consequences for your engine.

If you Jeep car has an interference engine failure to replace a cam belt that is damage will almost certainly damage your car.

If your timing belt snaps completely the car will not run, but if your cam belt is running whilst damaged it could be wreaking havoc beneath the engine hood unnoticed.

When the cam belt is damaged the valves and pistons in your car's engine will hit into one another potentially causing your valve guides to become cracked.

The valve guides in the engine of your vehicle may also bend which it can be expensive to fix.

In extreme cases your camshaft may even break.
