A report has shown that a third of all drivers on UK roads have suffered damage to their cars because of the poor quality of the country’s roads, with particular emphasis being paid to potholes. Councils have reduced their budgets and drivers are suffering because of the repair bills that they are being forced to pay. Problems have included burst tyres and damaged shock absorbers and suspension.
The problems that are being caused are amounting to hundreds of pounds in some instances . Roads are being maintained, but on an emergency only basis at the moment. A third of all motorists have had to have damage repaired to their cars due to potholes, according to a survey which was carried out by the Institute of Advanced Motorists. In some instances there have been reports of severe accidents being caused due to the presence of potholes, including crashes in some instances.
Neil Greig, who is the director of IAM’S policy and research is very unhappy with the condition of our roads. From the people who were polled, eighty percent said councils should be doing more. The roads have not yet recovered due last year’s harsh winter according to Ronan Hart, marketing manage for Autnational Rescue.
Motorist David Kellie said, “Who needs ‘sleeping policemen’ to slow down traffic?
“The roads are in such a poor state of repair that most drivers are unable to keep up with speed limits.
“Those on two wheels are in constant danger of being thrown off. We are fed up of hearing about cuts as the motorist is charged more and more at the pumps – where does all that tax and duty go?”
