General Motors Definitely Not Generous To A Fault

Following the discovery of a fault in fuel sensors in some models of General Motors vehicles a solution has finally been reached. General Motors have said they will cover half of the repair costs with regards to the fuel gauges which are defective in the models of Buick, GMC, Saab 9-7X sport utility vehicles and Chevrolets for the year 2005-2009.

A probe was undertaken by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier in the year after receiving reports that the fuel gauges were registering more fuel in the tank than was actually contained within.

Six hundred and sixty eight complaints were made to the NHTSA regarding the inaccuracy of fuel sensor readings within vehicles and an investigation was duly launched.  Eight hundred and sixty five thousand vehicles have been affected by the faulty sensor and the NHTSA says vehicle owners and dealers were notified in August of the decision to pay half of the replacement costs.

Fifty eight of the complaints involved stalled vehicles, of which forty three were directly linked to faulty fuel-level readings and one particular incident was reported as a vehicle stalling whilst trying to exit the motorway which resulted in the vehicle being hit from behind.

Allan Adler, General Motors spokesman, would not reveal the cost of repairs to the auto maker, but was quoted as saying that the fifty-fifty cost split would enable GM to “standardise the labour time necessary to perform the repair.”
