The BMW Group are set to launch two new concept vehicles, which are set to be the first electrically powered production cars from the new BMW I sub brand.
The new brands include the BMW i3 concept and BMW i8 concept.
The BMW Board of management are delighted with their new product, as the world’s leading premium car manufacturer their aim is to offer customers electrically powered cars.
Norbert Reithofer, who is chairman of the board said at Friday’s première of the vehicles, “I am really proud of our new cars and it makes a mark in history for the BMW group.”
The BMW i3 concept has been developed for its 125Kw electric and rear-wheel drive, optimal interior space and crash safety levels.
Each model will have four seats and a 200-litre area for luggage, making the car suitable for everyday use. The bodywork is made up of carbon.
Compared to a conventional electric car, the BMWi3 has a weight reduction unlike other cars, which have around 250 to 300 kilos. It’s lighter weight allows the BMWi3 more dynamic handling. Figures also show that the BMWi3 life cycle emission is far below that of a normal combustion engine.
The BMWi8 concept is a sports car for dynamic driving in and out of town. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in five seconds, and it is a hybrid drive which renders it suitable for everyday journeys.
With a 3 litre petrol engine the BMWi8 has a top speed of 250km/h and seats 4 people.
These cars will be built at BMWS Leipzig plant in Germany and and the project is expected to create around 800 jobs.
