This summer British holiday makers will be travelling by car to the continent. Over two million of the general public will do so in a bid to save money on travel expenses but little do they know it could end up costing a fortune.
Moneysupermarket.com has done research on this issue and has found that customers think they are fully comprehensive when really they are actually only covered third party when outside the UK. The policies go down when you travel to the continent according to an expert in car insurance called Peter Harrison who is a website expert.
Customers must ensure they read all the small print of the policy, and it’s in their own interests that they make sure they are fully comprehensive. There are some companies that cover to the full level of insurance who include the AA and Marks and Spencers who extend their polices for up to ninety days on the continent.
Companies like Direct Line and Churchill only offer the minimum required. The RAC offer insurance which only covers for 3rd party which means you are covered for injury and not your car.
Germany, France and Belguim have a minimum requirement of third party cover. Damaging your car abroad with 3rd party cover could cost you a fortune. Mr Harrison advised people to check their polices and make sure they are fully comprehensive as a standard package or to pay extra to upgrade.
It is also advisable to make sure that you have breakdown cover to avoid getting stranded and needing to be transported back to Britain. The AA and RAC offer the full assistance you would need and Ian Crowder from AA reported that these companies provide a full 24/7 cover and their call centre in Lyons can assist customers in most European languages.
