Comedian Rowan Atkinson is lucky to be alive, after crashing his McLaren F1 super car into a tree. The Mr Bean star was on his way home from filming a new spoof spy movie when the accident occurred. The McLaren spiralled out of control on the carriageway hitting a tree then bursting into flames. Atkinson was able to free himself from the auto mobile before the fire started thankfully.
Despite the high speed crash Mr Atkinson escaped with only a broken shoulder. The incident took place on Thursday evening and Mr Atkinson was rushed straight to Peterborough City Hospital where he was kept in for overnight observation and was released on Friday morning.
The accident happened just a month after the actor, who is well known as a ‘petrol head’ set the fastest lap on the BBC 2 TV show Top Gear in the ‘star in a reasonably priced car’ segment. The accident happened on the A605 at Haddon in Cambridgeshire. This is the second occasion that the star has crashed the McLaren after buying the car in 1997 following the huge success of the Mr Bean film.
In 1999 he crashed the car into the back of a rover which caused only minimal damage. Mr Atkinson’s agent released a statement after the accident saying that his client was returning home after filming the sequel to the hit film Johnny English.
Luckily nobody else was injured in the crash. Mr Atkinson was breathalysed at the scene, but with no traces of alcohol to be found on his breath was sent straight to a nearby hospital.
