Royal Wedding prompts no charges in Cotswold’s car park

Friday April 29th, the day of The Royal Wedding, has spawned another benefit for the people of the Cotswolds – all council owned parking will be free of charge.

The road outside the Churchill Arms in Paxford, Smith Barry Circus and Smith Barry Crescent in Upper Rissington plus High Street and Church Street in Chipping Campden in the north Cotswolds are amongst just three of the sixteen villages and towns who have had temporary road closures approved for the day of the Royal nuptuals.

The council is aware that this will lead to a severe reduction in available on street parking and has subsequently authorized free parking for the day in council owned car parks.

Claire Lock, head of Environmental Services stated that the council appreciated that, where on street parking is already limited and residents were required to park elsewhere due to organized street parties, problems could arise.

By offering free car parking on the Royal Wedding day, potential congestion could be alleviated giving everyone the opportunity to take advantage of the celebrations without worrying about where to leave their car.

Members of all political parties in the council have approved the gesture of goodwill which is extended to residents and visitors alike and could be of huge advantage on the day.

In an effort to encourage celebration amongst communities regular fees have been waived which has resulted in more Royal Wedding applications being received and approved by Cotswold District Council than any other district or borough in the whole of Gloucestershire.
