Nissan To Open Centre Of Excellence In Gateshead

Nissan LogoJapanese car manufacturers Nissan have announced a joint venture with Gateshead College to turn the region into the ‘epicentre of electrical vehicle expertise’ in Europe.

The company  recently signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the zero emission centre of excellence (ZECE) which it hopes will work with the companies such as the Sunderland Plant, where a new electric car will roll of the production line in 2013. The company intends the new building to be an ‘incubator’ for the electric vehicle industry. This will create jobs in the region and develop knowledge as well as technology. Initial research and development will focus on changing infrastructure and increasing battery life of the electric car.

Nissan already have a long standing relationship with Gateshead College, as the college is responsible for the training and development of workers at the Sunderland Plant.  Both organisations have been working together to develop an academy for sustainable  manufacturing and innovation. Gateshead College intends to build on its track record and create a number of jobs and apprenticeships in the local area. Gateshead College Principal, Richard Thorold, said it was a significant day for both firms and the low carbon sector for the whole of Europe.  Mr Thorold said he was proud of Nissan’s decision to allow the college to partner with the company in a new and leading direction.

Etienne Henry, Head of Nissan’s zero emission business unit, said that the new building will allow the company  to investigate the unique opportunities that the electric vehicle business will bring in regards to changing infrastructure. The company will require funding and Mr Henry believes Gateshead College will help them achieve that.
